Quick Reference

Terms your dentist uses —
explained plainly.

A reference for the words that come up at most dental appointments. No jargon, no Latin. Just clear definitions.

Plaque
A sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. It produces acids that attack enamel and irritate gums. Brushing and flossing remove it — but it reforms within hours.
Tartar (Calculus)
Plaque that has hardened onto the tooth surface. Once it mineralises, it can only be removed by a dental professional — not by brushing. It's why professional cleanings matter even if you brush well.
Gingivitis
Inflammation of the gums — usually caused by plaque buildup. It's reversible with improved hygiene and professional cleaning. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis.
Periodontitis
A more advanced form of gum disease where the infection spreads below the gumline and damages the bone that supports the teeth. It's manageable but not fully reversible — which is why early detection matters.
Occlusion
How your upper and lower teeth come together when you bite. A misaligned bite can cause wear, jaw pain, and cracked teeth over time — which is why it's assessed at every comprehensive exam.
Composite resin
The tooth-coloured material used for modern fillings and bonding. It's matched to your tooth colour and bonds directly to the enamel — which means less removal of healthy tooth structure than older amalgam fillings.
Endodontics
The branch of dentistry dealing with the inner part of the tooth — the pulp and root canals. Root canals are an endodontic procedure aimed at saving a tooth by removing infected pulp tissue.
Crown (Cap)
A custom-fitted cover that goes over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Modern crowns are typically ceramic and designed to match the surrounding teeth.
Osseointegration
The process by which a dental implant fuses with the jawbone. It takes several months and is what makes implants a stable, long-term solution for replacing missing teeth.
Prophylaxis
A professional dental cleaning — not just a polish, but a removal of tartar buildup above and just below the gumline. Also called a "prophy." The foundation of preventive care.
Worth Knowing

A few numbers that matter.

the interval that gives plaque the least opportunity to mineralise into tartar before professional removal
80%
less radiation from digital X-rays compared to traditional film — with higher resolution
1 visit
for most CEREC crown procedures — designed, milled, and placed the same day
